A beautiful tall Carnelian obelisk with rich burnt-orange and deep red colouring, broken by incredibly fine bands of cream, white and warm amber. Weighing 207g and standing approximately 15cm tall, this is an elegant statement piece with a different natural pattern revealed across every polished face.
This piece has particularly striking banding. Fine parallel layers curve and sweep through the Carnelian, creating almost topographic patterns through the deeper orange and red sections. One face features a dramatic ribbon of tightly packed cream and pale orange bands running vertically through the stone, while another reveals broader waves of translucent amber and rusty red.
There are also small orb-like formations and pockets of contrasting colour scattered throughout the piece, adding another layer of detail to the more linear banding. The polished surfaces allow the warmer translucent sections to glow beautifully under light, while the darker areas provide a rich contrast.
Its unusually tall, slender proportions make this a particularly striking Carnelian carving. At 15cm, it has plenty of presence without taking up a huge amount of space, making it perfect for displaying among a crystal collection, on an altar or as a warm-toned statement piece on a shelf.
Carnelian
Carnelian is an orange to reddish variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Its characteristic warm colouring is generally caused by iron oxides, producing shades ranging from honey and amber through burnt orange to deep reddish brown.
Some Carnelian forms alongside differently coloured layers of Chalcedony, producing the beautiful natural banding visible in this specimen. When the material is cut and polished, these successive layers can appear as fine parallel lines, sweeping curves, concentric formations and intricate landscape-like patterns.
In crystal traditions, Carnelian has long been associated with confidence, creativity, courage and motivation. Its fiery colouring is also traditionally connected with vitality, ambition and taking action.
