Description +

A beautiful hand-mined Shangaan Amethyst crystal from the Chibuku Mine in the Chiredzi area of Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe. Weighing 7g, specimen N is a wonderfully slender crystal with a long natural form, soft lavender colour and brighter violet concentrated around its termination.

This specimen has a particularly elegant shape, with long defined crystal faces running almost the full length of the piece. The body is pale and translucent, revealing fine internal veils, tiny mineral inclusions and natural growth features, while the upper section develops noticeably stronger purple colour. Under the light, flashes of lilac and violet appear along the edges and termination.

The termination has a lovely natural character, with multiple intersecting faces rather than a perfectly uniform polished-looking point. Fine horizontal growth lines can also be seen across the crystal, preserving the details of the way it formed underground. Its combination of length, translucency and concentrated colour makes this a particularly pretty little locality specimen.

Shangaan Amethyst

Shangaan Amethyst is a highly collectible locality Amethyst found in the Chiredzi area of Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe. This specimen comes specifically from the Chibuku Mine, an area known for producing distinctive naturally formed Amethyst crystals with individual growth habits, colour zoning and fascinating internal features.

The name Shangaan Amethyst was introduced in honour of the Shangaan people of the region, who have historically collected crystals from the area. The material is hand mined, with individual crystals carefully recovered rather than extracted through large-scale mechanised mining.

Part of the appeal of Shangaan Amethyst is the enormous variation between individual specimens. Crystals may be exceptionally slender, short and strongly formed, almost colourless through the body with violet terminations, or display deeper purple and smoky zoning. Natural growth lines, unusual terminations, inclusions and secondary formations mean that even small specimens can have remarkable individual character.

Its distinctive natural crystal habit, specific Zimbabwean provenance and limited locality have made Shangaan Amethyst sought after by collectors of unusual Quartz and locality-specific mineral specimens.

In crystal traditions, Amethyst is associated with calm, intuition, clarity and spiritual awareness.
