Optical Calcite Sphere with Rainbows | No. 1

A beautiful Optical Calcite sphere filled with incredible natural rainbow flashes, weighing approximately 250g and measuring around 5.5cm. This piece has that gorgeous icy, almost glass-like appearance Optical Calcite is known for, with layers of internal structure creating flashes of colour as the sphere is turned in the light.

Throughout the sphere are intricate natural cleavage lines, veils and crystalline textures, giving it an almost frozen appearance. The real standout feature, however, is the collection of bright internal rainbows. Depending on the angle, flashes of blue, pink, green, yellow and violet appear across the internal fractures, with some areas producing beautifully defined spectrum-like bands.

Optical Calcite is particularly fascinating because of its interaction with light. Clear varieties of Calcite are known for double refraction, an optical phenomenon where light entering the crystal is split into two rays. Combined with the internal crystalline structures in this particular sphere, it makes for an incredibly interesting piece to turn and explore from different angles.

Small natural golden to ochre mineral markings are also visible in places, adding a subtle contrast against the otherwise icy-clear crystal. Every turn reveals something slightly different, from soft flashes of colour to larger concentrated rainbows hidden deeper within the sphere.
